I've always had a hard time trying to understand the censorship mentality. Presumably, each of our irate correspondents had read the tobacco ad and had been left none the worse for reading it. Yet each apparently assumed that others could not be trusted to exercise such good judgement. Censors always assume that they are strong enough to handle material that others must be shielded from. Curious. --Erwin Knoll And Stephen Chapman; Advertising Should Not Be Limited essay

The original of this list was copied from: Page 451 and has been updated periodically. You can see a brief history on this page and my rationales for including titles.

Please note: Not every book on this list has been banned. There have been attempts to remove each book from a public library, school, or other source, or to otherwise keep it out of the hands of the public, although the challenge or action might not have resulted in a banning. Those titles marked in blue are ones I have read. This particular list pertains specifically to attempts to ban and should not include books which had been expurgated or bowdlerized. (Although there is little difference between banning and expurgation since both are censorship; expurgation is just censorship trying to be sneaky.)

As of: 25 Oct 2009
this page contained: 720 titles
the total list was up to: 2,941 titles
I had read: 274
A mere: 9.32 percent rounded off
